Big Lenticular Sunset Over the Organ Mountains for Skywatch

My sister and I love to sit outside on the patio and watch the sunset reflected on the Organ Mountains. This habit, and the fact that we enjoy a glass of wine while observing the sky, has given us an immediate reputation in our new neighborhood. Whenever we meet another neighbor for the first time, she will say, "Oh, you're the ladies down at the little adobe house who watch the mountains every afternoon!" The more diplomatic ones will add, "... while drinking tea!"

When this sunset started shaping up, I ran for my camera. I literally didn't know which way to turn because, while this big lenticular show was taking place over the mountains, the sunset sky was almost as spectacular in the other direction. I'll post those photos for the next Skywatch.

I tend to tilt the camera when I get excited. Other than the tilt correction and a bit of cropping, these photos are straight from the camera. The colors you see are just as we saw them on this spectacular evening. Click on the photos for a slightly larger view.

  1. These are simply stunning. I'm so glad you moved to Las Cruces, and I know you are, too - not only when you watch the sunsets but when you compare those weather forecasts on the sidebar and gloat.

  21. Yep, the sunsets really ARE more amazing there. Sometimes I start thinking it's just my revisionist memories. Had a gorgeous winter sunset here in North Texas a few weeks ago that was a glowing orangy red, but it was only in the west and lasted at most 15 minutes. I remember sitting on the porch in Alamogordo, enjoying the sunset falling over the Sacramentos in the east rather than looking west. Really enjoyed. Thanks.

  22. How stunning. It's like a scene from a sci-fi film. Now I know where they got their ideas for.
