Dancing with Death: Day of the Dead, 2011

On the Day of the Dead--surely one of the stranger holidays here--we remember that although death walks among us...

we can always smile...

and honor our dead with memorials...

and little altars...

for beloved pets, too

We can make art...

and we can always dance!

Amazing and unusual, but any reason to smile and dance sounds good to me -- particularly these days! Love your captures for the day! Happy Halloween and Day of the Dead! Have a great holiday, Clairz!

I love this display of Día de los Muertos. I wish that our country had a similar national event for our deceased friends and relatives. As a child it was obligatory to join my family to visit, view and decorate the gravesites of our relatives on Memorial Day. No more because the cemeteries have stricter rules for year-round upkeep.

This is a very interesting celebration. Leave it to mankind to think of all kinds of celebrations :-)

I like your new header too! Hope you enjoyed your month and look forward to the new one. Time passes so quickly, especially for those who like to keep busy.

It is nice to see people dancing and celebrating the day ,remembering the dear departed as opposed to celebrating the darker side of death and the occult.
Thanks for sharing your photos of the day.

I suppose any day we are alive is a good one. I do fear death... there are so many things I want to do before I go... hopefully I'll have the time. Though we never know, do we. I always miss these celebrations, but I do think often of those in my own life that have passed. I love the skully artwork. I just received an apron in the same style and it is way cute!

I loved learning about Day of the Dead when we visited New Mexico the first time (and it was at the right time of year). Your great pix brought back wonderful memories.

Darn, not going to make NM this roadtrip -- too cold in Colorado for our little Class B travel van, -- we got too late a start, so we'll go the Coast route. Next Spring I hope.
