La Mesa en la Noche

Anton doing "puppy eyes"

In the middle of the night, I was feeling as though something was not quite right. I got up to take a look around and heard a voice from the kitchen: "Ooo-hoo," it called to me. "Ooo-hoo, SeƱora. Psst... yo soy aqui, sobre la mesa."

Little Anton Chico had snuck out in the night to have an expensive special prescription kitty food snack up on the kitchen table. However, things had been rearranged in the ongoing kitchen renovation project and little Anton couldn't find his way down from la mesa in the dark. He had to make a tiny bed up there on my purse, and when that wasn't comfy, on my sun hat.

When I rescued him, he was muy avergonzado (according to my Google translator) and, stopping only for a quick drink of agua, ran off to bed and burrowed back under the covers where all good little chihuahuas belong.

Here is Anton checking out the runaway vegetation in the front yard after his rescue from la mesa.
(You were right, Christine, those hollyhocks will take over--see the comment from Quiet Paths on the
5/4/11 post called "My First Hollyhocks")

Little Anton can make good puppy eyes *smile. I love your garden. Perhaps when I get tired of trying to grow things, I can plant some hollyhocks and they will take over. So far nothing much thrives in my little garden except for a strong bush and a young Dogwood tree. It doesn't help that I don't get much sun and we sometimes get a lot of rain.

If I had an overgrown walkway that looked that good, I'd just call it my lush, verdant free-form garden! Anton looks really, really small surrounded by your plants!

I've had to do midnight rescues but your little one is so cute.

Your yard looks fabulous. Mine is overshadowed by the forest next to me so I don't get much color.

Hi Clair, just stopping by to say hello it's been awhile and I chose the right day because I love this little guy. And I love what's going on in your front yard too. I always associate N.M. with Hollyhocks - they were growing all over Santa Fe whenever I was there. one of my faves. Your garden is beautiful. happy day to you.

Anton is dwarfed by those HHs! Oh my goodness, Clair. They are gigantic. What a sweet story though. Such gorgeous colors. Well done, lady! Best Hollyhock story ever.

Holly hocks and the yellow flowers were called 'bird of paridise' by my mother, also known as poinsina, (hope I spelled it right) Not the Christmas flower ponsita but a differnet flower that is very drought resistand and has such beautiful flowers and then the seed pods pop like firecrackers in the late summer and then they come up everywhere. But I love them. Pup is cute.

Oh, Anton looks so sweet with his big puppy eyes! Your hollyhocks look great, I used to grow them in California, maybe they would grow here in AZ.
