You know you have moments here and there when your hands are idle—riding in the car, watching TV, sitting in meetings, or chatting with friends. Why not use that time to produce some warm mittens, socks, hats, simple baby quilts, or sweaters for someone in need? If you’ve been reading this blog for any time, you know that I make hand-knit sweaters for Knit for Kids. I’m on sweater number 32 right now, and all of them have been created with time that would otherwise have been wasted. It warms my heart to think that some little kids might be more comfortable this winter because I put my spare minutes to work.

Bless you, clairz - that is a wonderful idea! But for all my minor talents, I am a complete klutz when it comes to working with needles - I would surely lobotomize myself. Hope that those who can will follow your lead!

Thanks for the links. I am still not finished with the first sweater for Knit for Kids (got busy with the holidays) but I will get it finished up soon; already have the yarn for sweater #2. Then I'll check out some of the patterns/projects at the other sites you posted.

Lin, I laughed when you said that you were a klutz at working with needles. Well, I'm a klutz at climbing on roofs to deal with power problems, and with getting trucks out of arroyos, and with all the other talents you use in living off the grid, although in my younger days I milked goats, sheared sheep, and delivered all kinds of barnyard babies. Let's make a deal--you keep hiking up and down your mesa, and I'll take care of the sedentary stuff!
Sharon, I've made a chart for the Knit for Kids pattern that makes it easier to see at a glance the numbers of stitches and rows needed for each size. I made it because I kept transposing numbers from the original pattern and coming up with some weird proportions that needed to be ripped out. I'll put it on the blog as soon as I figure out how to do that!
