Tinnie Greens Up for Skywatch

The old-timers in this part of the state say that this year is the greenest they can remember. Abundant afternoon rains and our almost-daily sunshine have made our hills, mountains, and valleys lush with growth.* The Hondo Valley of southeastern New Mexico is no exception. It is home to orchards, lavender fields, and iris farms and is a beautiful place any time, but it seems even more so this year.

I took these photos near the tiny town of Tinnie (pop. 174) as we drove on our way recently from Las Cruces to Clovis.

Blue skies are wonderful and we are so lucky to have them most of the time here in New Mexico, but seeing all this green this year makes us very, very happy. For sky photos from all around the world, be sure to visit Skywatch Friday.

*"lush with growth"--As I re-read this post and look at the photos, I realize that "lush" is in the eye of the beholder. I guess that the vegetation in these photos would look "lush" only to a desert dweller. Perhaps I am becoming a true Westerner!

A visit to Clovis? Shoot, if I were still there, we could have visited! I drove up to Taos on tuesday, & I noticed it seemed greener than usual through the valley, too.

Beautiful skies and so much lovely green! I'm amazed to see the leaves already beginning to turn here in Seattle! Fall is just a few steps away! Have a great day and a wonderful weekend, Clariz!

Yes, I would say that you are becoming a westerner....to us lush to someone from back east, HUH? We've got a trip to Portales planned the first of the week. Now I can hardly wait to see what the landscape is like. Our daughter went to school in Portales and so we've seen many a dry spell as well. Thanks for your photos and having an appreciation for the "finer NM" things. The Olde Bagg

I love your photos. Wish I were there with you ... and it does look lush. (having been to N Mex .. I understand)

Oh yes...lush for sure. While you are raving over just greeness, we are mowing our pastures to keep them at a height that the miniature horses can handle! Too much grass makes for a sick and fat mini.

Beautiful vistas and yes, very very green for this time of year out there!
Wish we had a little more green left here in So Cal , we have gone to that shade of greenish /gray/toast that indicates the beginning of fire season.
Very refreshing to at least visit the color Green here on Skywatch...Thanks!

Is Tinnie anywhere near Pie Town? I love the names of small towns in New Mexico.

And since I'm suffering from severe horizon deprivation at the moment, I have to thank you for the therapy!

Have a great weekend; hope the trip to Clovis was fun.

Owlfarmer, I love the name Pie Town, too. It's right near Magdalena and the Plains of San Agustin. They are all located to the left (on my mental map) of Socorro.

Tinnie, on the other hand, is a couple of hundred miles southeast from Pie Town, and is near Arabela and Picacho. I love that Hondo Valley, where Tinnie is located, so much and want to spend some serious time up there with the lavender and irises and the Peter Hurd paintings, too.

As you can see, I love those place names too and am happy just listing them out.

My Skywatch is here.

It looks lush to me...compared to what our yard looked like all summer! We're greening up now, but walking across the grass was like walking across straw back in July.

Great landscapes (and sky-scapes)today!

It fun to see different parts of the U.S. I drove through this area many years ago and found it to be as picturesque as your photos show. Thanks for the memories!

Tinnie - and the Hondo Valley - if I could live anywhere in NM - I think it would be in that valley!

lush, I think is quite accurate. Your photos are lush with varying shades of green and beautiful pastoral scenes; blues skies and puffy clouds....mmmm....lovely!
