We ate at La Posta in Mesilla, New Mexico the other night. We like to take out of town friends there, because the chile is mild enough for the most gringo of palates and because the atmosphere is so wonderful in the century-old adobe rooms.
Lisa, we had the usual fare--chiles rellenos, enchiladas, and so on. Because the food is so mild it all tastes the same to us, but works really well for las turistas.
We like our New Mexican dishes with a lot more chile heat, like we get at Nellie's Cafe. Now that's some perky chile, and we never miss having a breakfast there once a week. I'll take pix of some of our favorites there next time we go.
So sorry about your little chick--we lost one, too, and I haven't really been prepared to tell the sad story just yet.
Yes, I hear ya on the "too-mild fare'. My boys used to be like that when they were younger, even though they were born in New Mexico. Now that they are 14 and have acclimated to spicy food, they insist on layering on green chile and jalapenos on everything they eat, including subs and my home-made pizza. Mild green chilies aren't even worth putting on our food. And I can't even imagine most any food without some kick to it, and green and red chile are a necessary condiment...and even the perfect side dish. :)
So sorry to hear that you lost a little biddie, too. It's so difficult even when they're young and you've only had them for a short time. We get attached so easily, too.
Such a friendly room -- beautiful deep colors, looks like a wonderful place to go (if they serve extra chile pepper for those of us with more "developed" (palates. (I love spicy food.)
Christine (Quiet Paths), I can see that I'll have to report back from our weekly breakfast at Nellie's. Lots of chile, both red and green, and nice and hot. It's what we've grown to love over the years about New Mexican cuisine.

That looks nice. When I went to Tucson, I loved the b & B we stayed in. Cute and cozy and lots of tile and blue everywhere.
How neat! Looks and sounds good too.

Welllllll....if I come, I'll ask them to ramp up the heat a bit for me. Not local hot...just something in between local and gringo! Great fireplace!
I would like to know what kind of spicier meals you folks like to eat? I love that photo. It looks like a very cozy place to eat.
