The Old Man Kicks

If I didn't give you any information to go with these photos, wouldn't you think that Beez was sliding in snow?

The old man kicks!

Faking it

Resting up for another climb
Even though we live just a couple of hours from a great ski mountain here in southern New Mexico, we'd have a hard time finding any snow this time of the year. Beez is sliding on the pure white gypsum sands at White Sands National Monument, just 45 minutes from our home in Las Cruces.

While we were there with our kids who were visiting from California and New York, we met and chatted with tourists from Switzerland and France. The Monument was recently named one of the best family-friendly parks by Open Road Guides. The dunes offer hiking, nature watching, sliding (of course), and lots of solitude.

This little guy is called the Bleached Earless Lizard (click twice to enlarge the photo).
He is perfectly camouflaged against the white, white sands

Go Beez! I love that he still enjoys having fun like a kid. Did you slide down, too?
White Sands is so freakin' awesome! Hot and dry! But awesome! We usually end up shaking sand out of our clothes, car, and nether regions for many days afterwards. lol!
Good for you noticing the bleached lizard. They are next to impossible to find. Perfect camouflage!

That is my kind of "snow" sliding! We've slid (is there such a word?) on the dunes in Oregon, but I'm quite sure they are molehills compared to where y'all were!
There is something strange and wonderful about the lizard's name -- as if the sun had dried all the color out of him.

Looks like such fun and I love that you all had so much fun.

Cool lizard! I did think it was snow at first...and then when I read it was sand, I wondered, "Now, did she bring a snow saucer from New England just in case....??" Inquiring minds want to know!!!!

Deb, they rent/sell the saucers at the visitor's center. Lisa, I had fun taking pix. Too hot to climb that dune!
