Trinity Site for Skywatch Friday

Keep Out!!!
The world's first atomic detonation took place at the Trinity Site on July 16, 1945. It's located at the northern end of the White Sands Missile Range in central New Mexico. You can take a tour there twice a year. We went in October 2007, when I took this photo.

The atomic bomb made the prospect of future war unendurable. It has led us up those last few steps to the mountain pass; and beyond there is a different country. ~J. Robert Oppenheimer.

One has to look out for engineers; they begin with sewing machines and end up with the atomic bomb. ~Marcel Pagnol

Be sure to go to the Skywatch Friday website to see photos of skies all over the world. You can see the week's photos any time after 2:30 EST on Thursday.

This site makes me sad, although the distant mountains and the sky are lovely.

Whoohoo! Another New Mexican! Thanks for stopping by the 7MSN (which is at the northern edge of the White Sands Missile Range and not all that far from the Trinity Site). I'm still snortin' over the 401-keg. And that quote from Under the Tuscan Sun just couldn't be truer. I'll be back.

Good, 7msn, glad I made you snort! I was doing plenty of that over at your blog. Think I'll go back again and take another look at that pig...

hey - I've been there too during our brief stay in El Paso. Great capture - the sign pretty telling. Happy SWF! Thanks for stopping by to see my Elk this week!

Great photo and really great quotes. I guess the "bomb" did not deter anything.
Cheers

I love the picture. My Bob was a mechanical engineer so I totally understand the quote. The 401 keg plan below is funny.

Not one of my favourite places to be, we had one of those tests in the desert here too where most of the people working there died of radiation sickness or cancer.
