Smoky Sunrise, for Skywatch

Oh, how I grieve for the birds and animals and people of Arizona, with those horrid fires all over. New Mexico has its share this year, too, but nothing like the size of the fires in our neighboring state to the west.

We are experiencing some smoke down here in the southern part of New Mexico, but I understand that the smoke is so heavy in the central part of the state, up around Albuquerque, that it makes it hard to see and breathe.

This was our rather smoky sunrise a couple of days ago. For skies, both clear and otherwise, all around the world, please visit Skywatch Friday.

I've been wondering how you are doing down there with the fires...so sad...what's going on? Smoke or no, I'm so looking forward to being there very soon!

Nice colors in the sky. I used to live in Eagar, AZ as a kid so I've been following the Wallow fire stories with some interest.

My 83 year old dad, former Forest Ranger, and forest fire fighter isn't too impressed with how fires are fought these days.

Hi Clair,
love your new header. yes, we have had some seriously bad smoky days here, where they were warning even healthy people not to be outdoors. but for now, we are having a little respite. i have seen quite a few sunrise/sunsets like you have pictured here. Now we have a fire in Raton that is raging out of control & has shut down 1-25. where is smoky the bear when you need him?

Of all the changes between here and there, this must be one of the most profound, Clair.

Nan, everything about this place is so different from New England--it's as though I've moved to another planet. No, another universe, where time has a different meaning, the language is new, water is rare and precious, fire is always present or threatening in the summers, and the sky is bigger than I ever thought possible.

Beautiful, but scary skies, Clairz, I do hope the fires have been contained so that you don't have them get any closer! This has been a year of so much violent weather!! Terrific captures for the day!

It is very, very sad. The Arizona fires have been in the Canadian news too. Did you hear about Slave Lake, Alberta (Canada) that lost 40fi of its town including its business district? Scary!

Even though smoky, these are wonderful sunrise shots.

A paradox - pollution creates beautiful colors ...

I was wondering how the sky was looking where you are; I join you in your concern about the condition of the wildlife. Human-generated fires are unforgivable, and have little to redeem them (unlike the natural stuff, which usually does its part to renew the areas prone to it). The Wallow fire is so huge that it boggles the mind. Glad it's not growing in your direction!

So sad. We had a horrific fire in Israel this past winter so seeing another area devastated just breaks my heart.

I too feel for the people and wildlife fleeing the Wallow fire. We have forest fires here in So Cal every few years and the smoke is a real hazard to breathing.
The photos taken during these times are always beautiful though , thanks for sharing.

our climate is so different, it is hard to imagine how awful that must be...your photos are beautiful, but such a sad situation to make them possible.

Beautiful photos, but sad circumstances.

Nice captures - we've had this smoke too, on and off for weeks now.

I've been reading about this and it's heartbreaking. people are having to breathe not only the smoke but the chemicals their using too. this is not good. when fires rage like that I sometimes feel that the whole world is on fire. on a lighter note - great sunset shot!
take good care.

I meant sunrise. :)

The news of fires in Arizona have not as yet reached Australia. having lost everything to a bushfire, I really feel for all those threatened as well as fighting them.
Smoke in the air always makes photos more colourful.

Beautiful captures and colors. The fires are really scary, I hope they are contained soon. It is sad for the wildlife and the people who loose their homes. I hope you stay safe where you live. Happy skywatching and have a great weekend!

So you are getting smoke in NM. Nice shot. Visit my blog. I have posted a series of pics sent by friends of the fires in Sierra Vista, AZ. The friend are packing up their cars because the fires are now just two miles from their home.

Smoke does make for beautiful skies, but the rest of the consequences are so grim.
