Because we live in a desert area, and because we are also in the midst of a years-long drought, we are always very excited to see any amount of water. When we came across Lake Mescalero as we drove to the Inn of the Mountain Gods, we had to stop to take a photo.
And then one more. Beautiful water...
The inn is located in the Sacramento Mountains in south central New Mexico, next to the village of Ruidoso. This photo shows part of the inn itself, which is also a resort and casino. Since we aren't gambling or golfing people, and because we were saving for our upcoming road trip, we only took pictures, then continued on our way. You can see some far more professional photos on the inn and the resort, as well as information about the Mescalero Apache tribe that owns the property on the Inn's website.

It's such a beautiful area -- even with the drought! I've been to Ruidosa many time when I was growing up in west Texas. Great captures for the day, Clair! Hope your week is going well!
It truly is a remarkable place! When we were last in NM, we drove to Las Cruces when we meet you and Bill. We stopped at the Inn to look around and would have spent the night but we had a dog with us, which they refuse to accommodate. The views from the main lobby is spectacular. No other word for it!
It's always nice to live by a body of water like a stream, a river or a lake. It also gives nice photo opportunities ;-) I can see how dry the grass is around the lake but the grass around the casino is very green. They must have to use a lot of water to keep it that way. Have a wonderful rest of your week.
Some great trout fishing, or used to be. For my nineteenth birthday, my dad asked what I wanted to do with him, and I asked for fishing at the lake. No one else there on a weekday, and we didn't catch anything--it was midday--but we laughed and visited. Wonderful memory. He died two weeks later.
Looks like a nice place to have a picnic under a tree with a fan of course.
I would always rather see your photos and hear what you have to say about a place than read what the resort PR flacks say about it. Thank you for sharing. This definitely doesn't look like the New Mexico we loved. (It's beautiful, just not what we think of.)
